This guide was written in the interest of the Health and Safety in the South African workplace.

This guide does not intend to be a substitute for the Occupational Health and Safety Act of 1993. The main purpose of this guide is to explain the Health and Safety Act in simple, non-legal terms so that any-one who reads it can have a broad overview of how legislation requires Occupational Health and Safety to function in the workplace.

  1. An introduction to the Health and Safety act,
  2. The role of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspectors of the Department of Labour is explained.
  3. The duties and rights of workers with regards to Occupational Health and Safety, as envisioned in the Act, are set out.
  4. The roles and responsibilities of employers, manufacturers, designers, importers, suppliers and sellers, in ensuring the Health and Safety of workers are highlighted.
